I'm inclined to think not. Which, if true, would confirm the popular theory that humans are just savage animals with a bigger-than-usual neocortex and the ability to use it. And if humans could be moral without religion then it would seem that humans could exact their own retribution for breaches of morality, so it would seem that we don't need it (forgetting the issue of an afterlife for the sake of this question).
